Sunflower Journeys Programs 2305-2306
#2305 - In the city of Wichita, there are a number of businesses owned by families whose ancestry connects them to the Middle East. In this show, we meet some of these owners and learn how their families have been involved in the local community there for more than a century. After that, we observe stone carvers who are working on the Kansas State Capitol Building in Topeka, and see how the multi-year restoration project is proceeding. And in our Plains People segment, we catch up with Marge Heeney, an avid fan of hats and feathers who plays an active role in the Topeka community through her civic involvement.
#2306 - In this show, we visit Paola to see how an old auditorium that was constructed in 1916 has had major renovations, providing Paola and surrounding communities with a showcase for local arts and educational activities. Then we drop south to Pittsburg and see how the Colonial Fox Theatre and Stilwell Hotel provide anchors for downtown redevelopment. In our Plains People segment, we meet Karri Barker, a Paola resident who grew up watching her grandfather talk to people around the world on Ham radio. Now, she has embarked on a quest to do the same as a member of her local amateur radio club.
